The Struggling Manager
Helping you get more out of work.

How to Win Friends and Influence People by Carnegie
by Rob Redmond - April 8, 2008

If you are a more technical person or the kind to focus more on your to-do list than chit-chatting with people and making new friends, then you’re probably not cut out for sales, and this book could contain several keys to your future success.

It is not every writer who authors up a book title which becomes a household expression. Every day a thousand people somwhere say, “You really know how to win friends and influence people!” with great sarcasm. How ironic it is that those very people probably need the help offered in this book more than almost anyone else.

This book is a must-read, and it is a great first read. In fact, I’d recommend that every child entering 5th grade be given a copy of this book and be put through a course of home study of the contents by their parents, memorizing the principles within. What an amazing difference to so many people this sort of material can make if they can only find it.

Examples of what you will learn in How to Win Friends:

  • Never criticize anyone.
  • Never complain
  • Smile
  • Be genuinely interested in other people
  • 30 or so more principles

Unfortunately, this book is like many other general purpose self-development texts - it has become a darling of the management and sales gurus, and as such, is almost totally ignored in every other venue.
